Motion Blur

On the move

Motion blur is often a matter of personal preference. Some swear by it's use. For others, it elicits a vomit-response. This effect, however, has good intentions.

Simulating Reality

"Motion blur" in the real world occurs in our brain when we see objects moving quickly. It also sometimes occurs in movies due to a difference in camera shutter speed, and the playback framerate. The effect is added into video games to make them appear more "realistic".

Pros and Cons

Should I enable motion blur?

Motion blur can significantly improve the experience of the game you are playing by adding this realistic effect - but it may not be useful in competitive settings.

Pros:

  • Added realism
  • In some situations, motion blur makes the game feel faster-paced
  • Visually pleasing for some
  • Good quality implementations of motion blur can sometimes reduce motion sickness

Cons:

  • Small performance impact
  • Poor quality implementations of motion blur can sometimes lead to motion sickness
  • Reduces clarity in motion. This makes motion blur a disadvantage in competitive shooters, and should be disabled in these situations.
